Protecting Pollinators: Why Our Work at Hany’s Harvest Starts with the Bees

Spring is in the air, and at Hany’s Harvest, that means one thing: it’s time to check in on our bees. This first weekend of April, we’re welcoming new hives to our farm, adding to the colonies that miraculously made it through winter. Beekeeping has always been at the heart of Hany’s journey, and while our business has grown, our commitment to protecting these vital pollinators has never wavered.

Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and other insects are declining at alarming rates. Studies show that butterfly numbers have fallen by nearly a quarter since 2000 (NPR), and beekeepers are struggling to keep colonies alive amid rising environmental pressures (NPR). Even well-intended environmental protection policies can sometimes have unintended consequences for pollinators (FWS).

At Hany’s Harvest, we practice treatment-free beekeeping, allowing our bees to naturally build their resilience against mites and other stressors. By avoiding chemical treatments, we encourage stronger colonies that are better equipped to adapt and thrive. Our approach prioritizes the bees’ natural ability to maintain their own health, ensuring they can continue to do what they do best—pollinate and sustain ecosystems.

We also dedicate part of our farm to planting flowers specifically for our bees. Since many of our native pollinators have short tongues, we select varieties they can easily access, making it easier for them to gather nectar and strengthen their hives. These small but intentional choices make a big difference in supporting the health and longevity of our colonies.

For us, beekeeping isn’t about selling honey—it’s about supporting the very creatures that make our ingredients (and so much of our food system) possible. Bees don’t just pollinate flowers; they sustain ecosystems. Their work directly impacts the quality of the plants and herbs we use in our fire ciders and wellness tonics. Every time we check on our hives, we’re reminded that this business started with a simple love for beekeeping and a deep respect for nature’s balance.
